The Rogue Valley stands at a pivotal moment in reshaping our food landscape—where what we eat, how it’s grown, and who has access to it all matters. This new five-year Action Plan, shaped by the voices of over 2,000 community members and grounded in local knowledge, offers a clear path toward a food system that is equitable, sustainable, and resilient.

The plan builds on the foundation laid by the Rogue Valley Community Food Assessment—a region-wide effort to better understand the current state of our food system. That process was relaunched with the Rogue Valley Community Food Solutions Summit, held on March 16, 2023, at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center. The Summit brought together farmers, food advocates, community organizations, and residents from across Jackson and Josephine Counties to share their knowledge, expertise, and vision. It marked the beginning of a community-wide conversation to update the previous food assessment conducted in 2013.

Through this collaborative effort, key challenges and opportunities were identified—from food access and farm viability to resource stewardship and food waste. These insights became the backbone of a community-driven strategy designed to transform the Rogue Valley’s food system for the better.

Centered around four key goals, the Action Plan outlines 16 objectives and more than 100 action items to guide collective progress:

1. Ensure everyone has access to enough affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.

2. Strengthen the local food and farm economy.

3. Promote sustainable farming practices that protect soil and water.

4. Reduce food waste and increase resource efficiency across the food system.

It’s a collaborative framework created by the people who grow, sell, cook, and gather around food in the Rogue Valley.
